The IceHouse Trip '97

How I spent my early October 4 day vacation

A wonderful morning in the snow making breakfast. Nice and warm outside, not a drop of rain in the sky. Of course we all froze our booties off the night before trying to make dinner in the rain, then the snow. Watching Liz smoke her eyebrows with what was not olive oil while frying up dinner. Have you ever watched a group of 13 people make a fire in the snow, using an umbrella? How about almost using white gas on an already burning charcoal fire?

Yes friends, it was fun. We were all happy campers. We all got along with one another as well as an all American family gets along at the dinner table for a turkey day feast. Only we did not draw blood from one another. Oh, we did see blood - only it was our own fault most of the time.

Yes, it did snow. Not much, but enough. Enough that the small tent behind the blue/orange tent was crushed like a bug the night before in the never ending 4 inch heavy snow fall.

And yes, we did have fire. Some fire. Not much, just some. We had fire pretty much every morning and night. We had plenty of food and can thank Liz for feeding us well. We brought a lot of alcohol with us, but surprisingly little was had. This is probably one reason we did not outright kill each other.

That is, except when we had smoke. A lot of smoke. We had 13 people expert in making a fire, and nobody able to keep the smoke under control. Yes, we suck. And then there were those of us who wanted to be inside with a fire, playing cards, drinking their choice of 5 drinks - Coors, Coors Light, Bud, Bud Light, and soda. Old Uncle Tom's was a busy place...once you got there...if you really did get there...in the car...ya, right, sure...

And of course we have the requisite truck photos.

And one of the Defender about to get stuck on its side rocker bars....in the cross axle way that is not recommended....in a way that 4 of us had to push off of the rocks...

...so that we could give you this photo of Shannon and his Rover at the beginning of the Rubicon Trail.
